EDHA concern guide

Habits & Addictive Behaviours

People may seek help for repeated behaviours that interfere with health, work, relationships or finances. Support should match the behaviour, severity and any associated medical or safety risks.

People often seek support when...

  • Repeated behaviour despite negative consequences
  • Strong urges or difficulty stopping
  • Using a behaviour to cope with stress or difficult emotions
  • Impact on relationships, work, finances or health

How counselling may help

  • Identify triggers, patterns and consequences
  • Build alternative coping strategies
  • Strengthen motivation and relapse-prevention planning
  • Clarify when specialist addiction treatment is needed

When other care may also be appropriate

Substance dependence, withdrawal risk, overdose risk or severe addiction may require specialist medical/addiction services rather than counselling alone.

EDHA is not an emergency service. If there is immediate risk, seek urgent in-person help through local emergency services or the nearest hospital. Government of India Tele-MANAS is available 24x7 at 14416 or 1800-89-14416.
