EDHA concern guide

OCD

Obsessive-compulsive difficulties can involve unwanted intrusive thoughts and repeated behaviours or mental rituals intended to reduce distress. The cycle can become time-consuming and disruptive.

People often seek support when...

  • Intrusive thoughts or images that cause distress
  • Checking, washing, counting, reassurance-seeking or mental rituals
  • Avoidance driven by fear of triggering thoughts
  • Significant time spent managing obsessions or compulsions

How counselling may help

  • Understand the obsession-compulsion cycle
  • Use evidence-based behavioural and cognitive strategies where appropriate
  • Reduce reassurance-seeking and avoidance gradually
  • Develop ways to respond differently to intrusive thoughts

When other care may also be appropriate

Some people benefit from specialist psychological treatment and/or psychiatric review. A qualified professional can help determine whether additional clinical assessment is appropriate.
