EDHA concern guide

Sleep Difficulties

Sleep problems may be connected with stress, anxiety, mood, routines, health conditions or other factors. Counselling can help when thoughts, habits or emotional patterns are contributing.

People often seek support when...

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Racing thoughts or worry at bedtime
  • Irregular routines or habits that disrupt sleep
  • Sleep difficulties affecting mood, concentration or functioning

How counselling may help

  • Review behavioural and emotional factors around sleep
  • Develop consistent routines and wind-down strategies
  • Address worry, rumination and unhelpful sleep beliefs
  • Identify when medical assessment may also be useful

When other care may also be appropriate

Persistent sleep problems can have medical causes. Seek medical assessment for concerns such as breathing problems during sleep, severe daytime sleepiness or other significant physical symptoms.
