Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a state in which an individual experiences a pattern of unwanted thoughts and fears (obsessions) that lead you to do repetitive behaviors (compulsions). These obsessions and compulsions interfere with daily activities and cause significant distress. One only feels comfortable momentarily, once actions are performed.

Symptoms

Generally, a person with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) possesses both, obsessions and compulsions. But then, it is also possible to have only obsession symptoms or only compulsion symptoms, as well. You may or may not realize that your obsessions and compulsions are excessive or unreasonable, but they take up a great deal of time interfere with your daily routine, and functioning, and may impact your social life too.

  • Strong and repeated thoughts to keep things in order
  • Doubts or various types and intensity
  • Unwanted thoughts may include aggression, sexual or religious

 

Common Compulsions are :

  • Repeated washing of hands
  • Checking doors repeatedly to make sure they're locked
  • Ascertaining if the Gas stove in the kitchen is off
  • Maybe counting in a certain pattern
  • Silently repeating a prayer, word, or phrase
